Marriage Preparation

"Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate"

(Mark 10:9)

Marriage Prep for Engaged Couples

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage!

Your decision to marry is a beautiful expression of love and deep trust. We celebrate your commitment as God's grace awaits you in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. The Family Life Office offers two options which are required to complete in order to be married - whether preparing for marriage for the first time, seeking convalidation from a civil marriage or remarrying after death of a spouse or annulment.

Options include: Weekends for the Engaged—in either Albuquerque or Santa Fe— or Pre-Cana (Evenings for the Engaged). Pre-Cana typically takes place over a period of five non-consecutive days while Weekends for the Engaged takes place over a three-day weekend (Fri-Sun). In order to receive the certificate of Con-validation, couples must attend all classes.

We look forward to walking with you as you prepare for a life of faith-filled love and partnership. May your time of preparation be filled with grace, joy, and anticipation.

To register for a program or learn more, please call 505-831-8117.

What to Expect Leading up to the Big Day

The Five-Step Marriage Preparation Process

Preparation for the Sacrament of Matrimony typically takes a minimum of six months and includes the following steps:

  1. Initial Interview - meet with your parish priest, deacon, or a designated lay minister. This first meeting includes an overview of the preparation process, a request for necessary documents (e.g., baptismal record, civil marriage license if applicable), and the reservation of your wedding date on the parish calendar.

  2. Guided Reflection & Discernment - you’ll participate in sessions—either one-on-one with a mentor couple or in a group setting like a weekend retreat or a series of evening workshops. These sessions encourage deep, heart-to-heart conversations about God, love, and married life. They also include an introduction to Natural Family Planning (NFP).

  3. Wedding Liturgy Planning- the Rite of Holy Matrimony follows a specific format, but there are many ways to personalize your celebration. Your parish team will assist you in selecting readings, prayers, and music that reflect your faith and relationship.

  4. Rehearsal - a wedding rehearsal at the church is typically scheduled the evening before your ceremony to ensure everything flows smoothly on your big day.
