Alternatives to Abortion

Deciding to Choose Life for the Right Reasons

Every child is a gift

Life is a gift, even in uncertainty. But when an unplanned pregnancy occurs, it can be overwhelming—especially for women who had other plans for their future. While Roe v. Wade was overturned, abortion remains legal in many states, including New Mexico, where countless unborn lives are ended each year.

According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute, nearly 96% of abortions are elective—meaning they do not involve fetal abnormalities, rape or incest, or threats to the mother’s health. Many women make this life-altering decision out of fear, pressure from a partner or family,

or a perceived lack of resources or support.

In today’s world, abortion is not only promoted by organizations like Planned Parenthood, but is also increasingly supported by major pharmaceutical companies producing chemical abortion drugs. These are often marketed to women at their most vulnerable moments—when they need support, not isolation.

But Scripture reminds us of God’s care and purpose for every life:

  • “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” — Jeremiah 29:11

  • “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” — Psalm 139:13–14

  • “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” – Psalm 127:3

Even when the timing feels impossible, children remain a gift from God. We may not feel ready—emotionally, financially, or otherwise—but ending a life to resolve a temporary crisis can have lifelong consequences.

If you or someone you know is facing an unplanned pregnancy, help is available. Although the Family Life Office is not directly affiliated with these organizations, we can share information about pro-life resources here in New Mexico.

There are nearly 2 million couples in the U.S. who long to adopt and are waiting for a child. In contrast, 1.14 million abortions were performed in the U.S. in 2024 alone. Adoption—especially open adoption—offers a loving alternative, allowing birth mothers the opportunity to remain connected to their child’s life.

Research also challenges the mainstream narrative around abortion and mental health. Women who have abortions are:

  • 37% more likely to experience depression,

  • 34% more likely to suffer from anxiety,

  • and at increased risk for other health complications, including premature death.

In a national survey of 1,000 women who had abortions, over 60% reported feeling high levels of pressure to go through with it. That kind of pressure leaves lasting scars—emotionally, spiritually, and physically.
